Water damage can cause a lot of problems for your cell phone. If you drop your cell phone in a cup of soda or a bathtub, you want to try and dry it out immediately. Remove the back cover and take the battery and SIM card out of the phone. If it is a flip phone, keep it flipped open. It is likely that your cell phone will turn on and start functioning regularly once it is completely dry. This doesn't mean you can be careless when your cell phone is around water. Practice the utmost caution for water protection and you may never need to buy a new phone again.

1. Keep your cell phone out of the bathroom. Unless you're in the middle of a call, there is really no reason to bring your cell phone into the bathroom. This is where a lot of water damage can occur to your phone. Countless people have left their cell phone on the edge of the tub or sink and watched it drop into a puddle of water.
2. Keep your phone in your pants pocket when going to the pool, lake or ocean for a swim. You don't have to bring your phone with you right to the edge of the pool when you're going for a dip. It is likely that you will be able to hear your phone ring from inside your pants pocket. If you don't think you will, go to your phone's call settings and increase the volume of your ringtone. If you're on a boat, try to put your cell phone in a purse or case to protect it from the water.
3. Prepare for rainy days. It is highly unlikely that a rain storm will damage your cell phone, but if you keep it out in the nasty weather long enough, it will. When you need to talk in the middle of a rainstorm, try to get some sort of cover over your phone. An umbrella will work best, but if you don't have one, a book, newspaper, magazine or even your other hand will work fine.
4. Take your cell phone out of your pocket when you go to sleep. The last thing you want to do is throw a pair of jeans into the washer machine only to find out that your cell phone is in the front pocket. A wash cycle will do major damage to your phone. It's always good to check your clothes thoroughly before you throw them into the wash. It's also a good idea to know where your phone is at all times.
5. Buy a waterproof phone case. These plastic cases will fit to the size of your specific phone and will offer full water protection. You will be able to text and talk while the cover is on and many are designed to float if dropped in water. If you plan to be on a canoe or kayak for an entire day, this is probably your best bet in ensuring your phone will stay dry.
