Retrieve Information From A Memory Chip

Data from memory chips can often be retrieved.


Memory chips are used in portable storage devices such as SD cards and memory sticks. If information on a card becomes inaccessible or corrupt, it may still be possible to retrieve the data from the memory chip.


Function








Memory chips store data using flash memory and do not need power to retain information. They work in harmony with a controller chip which reads and writes the data. There are no mechanical parts in a memory chip that can be damaged.








Problems


Memory sticks and SD cards may be damaged through use, and this can prevent access to the information stored on the memory chip. Often it is the controller chip that is actually damaged, but the saved data on the memory chip is still intact. Reading and writing errors can also cause data on a memory chip to be corrupted.


Retrieval


If the memory chip within your device is undamaged the data may still be retrievable, even if it cannot be accessed by conventional means. Data recovery software programs can save information from corrupted memory chips. A storage device that was physically damaged can be sent to a data recovery company. These companies attempt to retrieve the data directly from the memory chip for a fee. Usually there is no charge if the information cannot be retrieved.
