Make a Philips Old Big Screen TV Look Better
Old Phillips television screens used cathode ray tube (CRT) technology to bring the picture to the screen. These televisions were very large and very heavy, and the picture images were often hard to adjust for high quality. There are ways of improving this picture quality for slightly better results. However, not all of these methods will improve the quality of the picture. The best way to improve the screen quality is to replace the television with an LCD or plasma screen.
Instructions
1. Check the age of the system. Most CRT TV screens are not designed to last more than 10,000 hours of viewing time. If you watched the screen for three hours every day, your television would last about eight years. If your screen is older than that, it may be too old to produce a high-quality picture.
2. Position furniture so that the viewers see the screen head on. Viewing the screen at an alternate angle will change the way the picture looks, making it appear fuzzy, hazy or blurred in some way.
3. Move the TV to a darkened room. Too much light in the room is disastrous for an old CRT television screen. The light washes out the picture and makes it nearly impossible to view. Add blackout curtains to the room where the TV is located, or move the screen to a shady spot.
4. Clean the screen with screen cleaning wipes. It may be that the screen is smudged or dirty, which is interfering with the picture quality on the screen.
5. Adjust the contrast level on the screen. The contrast level should be between 60 and 65 percent for best results. This will help produce a more natural-looking image.
6. Set the brightness of the screen to between 58 and 62 on a scale to 100. Increase the brightness in a lighter room and lower it in a darker room. The pictures should appear natural and not look fake or washed out.
7. Adjust the sharpness of the image so that the pictures look natural. You should not be able to see an outline behind every object on the screen, but there should still be definition between objects. Adjust to your preferred level of sharpness.
8. Switch between picture modes in the TV menu to adjust for the kind of picture you prefer. If you watch a lot of sports, consider the "action" setting. For regular television programming and movies, consider the "natural" or "theater" settings.
