Use your camera creatively with new photography themes
The best way to break out of a creative photography slump is to come up with a bold theme for your next photography project. While it may be fun to photograph your pets and family in silly poses, there is more out there to get your creative juices flowing. Keep in mind when walking around or taking pictures of strangers that you should be safe at all times. Don't film in locations that are off-limits or in places you are completely unfamiliar with.
Lengths of Time
Various photography projects can be based on lengths of time. One project suggested by the online Digital Photography School is to take a picture of yourself each day for 365 straight days. This project will show how little or how much a person can change over the course of a year. The project can be adapted to one photo a week for 52 consecutive weeks. Another idea from the Digital Photography School is to go on one photo walk away from your house each week for an entire year. A photo walk is a trip through various locations with just your camera or with your entire photography group.
The Unknown
Base a theme on photographing the unknown. One idea is to photograph 100 strangers. This project will require a bit of personality, because you should always ask for permission, but you may make a few new friends in the process. Another idea is to photograph 100 places you have never been. You can also extensively photograph a subject you knew nothing about. For example, if you know nothing about baseball, you could photograph equipment, games and people playing the sport.
Telling a Story
Another project idea is to tell a story from beginning to end with just pictures. You can set up objects to tell the story (or have friends do it while you take pictures), or you can find a story in progress and photograph it as it unfolds. If something is going on in your own life, you can tell that story as the project.
Weather
You can do a project based on the weather if you have sufficient time and live in a part of the country that experiences all four seasons. Cody's Science Education Zone suggests taking a picture of every different kind of weather in your area, including fog, rain, sun, hail and snow. Don't put yourself in danger trying to get a picture of a hurricane or a tornado.
Superlatives
Make a list of your friends and acquaintances and decide who is the most talkative, the most likely to be successful, the cutest, etc. Take pictures of them that indicate these qualities and put them in a sort of makeshift yearbook, suggests Cody's Science Education Zone. Share the project with your friends and your classmates. Try to keep the superlatives positive so there are no hurt feelings.
