The Motorola Talkabout T5100 is a two-way radio released in 1999. The T5100 has many features, including 14 channels, a range up to 2 miles and a backlit LCD display. After a short setup out of the box, the T5100 is ready to use.
Installing Batteries
The T5100 use 3 AA alkaline batteries. They will keep the radio operating for up to 30 hours. To install the batteries, open the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Insert the batteries with the positive end of the left and right batteries facing the top of the radio and the positive end of the middle battery facing the bottom. Replace the battery cover, making sure it is locked in place.
Turn on the T5100 by turning the "Power/Volume" knob clockwise. You will hear a click, the radio will beep and the LCD indicator light will flash.
Features
To hear the radio's volume, press the monitor ("MON") button. To adjust the volume, hold down the "MON" button while turning the "Power/Volume" knob. The "MON" button also can be pressed to check for communication on the channel before transmitting.
You can also check for channel activity with the "Channel Busy" indicator. If the LED flashes twice per second, the channel is in use.
The "Menu/Lock" feature locks all of your settings. Press and hold the "Menu" button under the information screen for three seconds. A lock symbol appears on the screen. To turn off the "Menu/Lock" feature, press and hold the "Menu" button for three seconds again.
Communicating
Before you can communicate with the T5100, all the radios must be set to the same channel. To set the channel, press "Menu." With the channel blinking in the information screen, press the "+" and "-" buttons to scroll through the channels. Press the "Menu" or "Push-to-talk" button to set the channel.
To talk, press and hold the "Push-to-talk" button and speak into the microphone. To listen, release the "Push-to-talk" button.
