Use a Nikon SB-600
The Nikon SB-600 portable strobe unit is powerful and versatile flash designed to be used with either digital or film SLR (single lens reflex) cameras. The flash unit is positioned just below the SB-800 in Nikon's flash line-up, but it is powerful enough for most applications. The SB-600 has "Through The Lens" (TTL) metering, which ensures that an accurate amount of power is delivered through the flash to produce the correct amount of light to achieve a correct exposure of the scene the photographer is shooting.
Instructions
1. Remove the SB-600 from its box and soft case that is included with the flash. Install four new AA batteries into the battery compartment. Consider using rechargeable AA batteries if you plan to use your flash unit frequently.
2. Mount the flash on your camera. Lock the flash in place using the latch located on the rear of the flash just above the hot shoe.
3. Turn on the Nikon SB-600 and your Nikon camera. Look through the viewfinder. When the camera is activated through the shutter release, you should see a small lightning-bolt icon in your viewfinder, which indicates that a flash is mounted on your camera.
4. Select your shooting mode on your flash by pressing the Mode button on your flash. There are a number of programmed options, including i-TTL, standard i-TTL, Manual and Balanced Fill. Balanced Fill and i-TTL are automatic functions where the flash will take the guesswork out of determining the amount of power needed. These settings are ideal to use when you are shooting a fast-changing event, like a party or a sporting event. The other two settings allow you to manipulate the amount of power that the flash will use.
5. Place the flash in the i-TTL mode. Set the camera to shutter priority. Set the shutter at any speed up to 1/250th of second, which is the fastest shutter speed at which the flash will synchronize its operation. Start shooting. As you become more comfortable with the flash operation, experiment with the different settings.
