The Difference Between Cd Labels & Dvd Labels

There is no difference between the labels used on CDs or DVDs.

There is no difference between CD and DVD labels, other than the name change, depending on which medium the label is affixed to. Homemade printable labels and professionally pressed labels are exactly the same between CDs and DVDs.

CD Cases

CD cases differ from DVD cases in that CD cases conform to the size of the CD. According to Philips Research, "A jewel CD case is the original compact disc case that has been used since the compact disc was first released in 1982. It is a three-piece plastic case, measuring 142 by 125 by 10 mm (5.59 by 4.92 by 0.39 in.), a volume of 177.5 cm³, which usually contains a compact disc along with the liner notes and a back card. Two opposing transparent halves are hinged together to form the casing, the back half holding a media tray that grips the disc by its hole. All three parts are made of injection-molded polystyrene."

DVD Cases

According to enotes.com, "A standard DVD case is a single-piece plastic case with two creases, which folds around and snaps closed. It measures 135 by 190 by 14 mm (5.3 by 7.48 by 0.55 in.). It is wrapped on the outside by a thin piece of see-through plastic which can hold a paper label. The label measures 274 by 184 mm (10.8 by 7.25 in.)."

Homemade Labels

There are many homemade options for printing labels onto CDs and DVDs. Most often the user prints his desired graphics on a special sticky paper with pre-cut dimension so that when the sticker is removed it fits perfectly on top of the CD or DVD. Often these template sheets comes with an easy to use software that makes the process of printing labels a snap.

Professionally Pressed Labels

Professionally pressed CD labels use large press machines to press the graphics or label onto the CD. These result in the CD having the graphic or label look like it is not a label at all but actually in the CD. These labels are impossible to peel off because they are pressed into the CD itself.

Lightscribe

Lightscribe is an at-home CD or DVD labeling technology that uses a laser to etch graphics into the top of special Lightscribe compatible CDs and DVDs. The graphics are usually able to be made in various colors, and the CD or DVD looks like it has been professionally pressed.
