A damaged tape is not going to play in a VCR.
A VHS tape works through a magnetized strip that contains the audio and video data and scans over the headers of a VCR. However, if that tape comes off its reel, nothing will scan at all. Tapes can run off the reel when there's damage from the inner workings of an old VCR or when a high-speed VHS rewind machine pulls the tape out of place. It is possible to fix the tape but it may require taking the VHS apart.
Instructions
1. Flip the VHS tape over so the spindles are facing you. Set the tape down on a flat surface or the tape may completely unwind.
2. Remove the plastic screws from the corners of the tape with the Philips screwdriver. Once the screws are out, open the back of the VHS, which exposes the interior of the device.
3. Spin one of the reels gently and the tape that is off the reel should wrap back around it. Perform this slowly, otherwise you may tangle the tape.
4. Place the cover of the VHS back in place and reinsert and tighten the screws.
