Choose A Flash For A Canon 40d

There are several things to consider when purchasing an external flash for the Canon D40 digital SLR camera.

A Canon 40D is a mid-range camera used by those whose photographic abilities have moved beyond the use of entry level, compact point-and-shoot digital cameras. Unlike pictures taken with an entry-level camera, the images taken with a Canon 40D often require more light than comes from the standard, built-in flash. To solve this problem, many photographers purchase a separate flash. There are, however, different needs to consider when purchasing a flash.

Instructions

1. Identify what flash units are compatible with the camera being used. All digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras have a hot shoe, which allows an external flash to be connected to the camera. However, not all flashes are compatible with all makes and models of cameras.

2. Research the power levels available to different flashes to find the one that will suit the given needs of the photographer. Natural or ambient light is often convenient, but will not always be strong enough or coming from the proper direction. Your flash can compensate for this problem, but you still have to determine how strong the flash needs to be depending on what items are being photographed.

3. Price is a concern when purchasing any piece of camera equipment and a flash is no different. Ranging in price from $100 to $1,000, the flash that is chosen can be either fairly inexpensive, designed for use by an amateur photographer, to the more costly units often required by professional photographers.
