Transfer Wii Memory to USB
Planning to backup your Wii game data to a USB drive using the two USB ports on the back of the Wii console? Unfortunately, you are out of luck. You can use the USB ports to connect an Ethernet cable for Internet access or keyboard for typing, but currently the Wii firmware does not support the direct transfer of data in the Wii memory to a USB drive.
There are rumors that Nintendo is planning to support external USB hard drives and flash drives in a future release. Until then, there is one way to transfer data stored in the Wii's memory to a USB drive.
Instructions
Transferring Data from Wii Memory to an SD Card
1. Purchase an SD card. SD cards are small, thin cards used to store data in digital cameras, cell phones, and PCs. You can purchase an SD card at retail stores, like Wal-mart or Target for around $10.
2. Determine which Wii data to transfer. There are two types of data stored in the Wii's memory: Channel data, such as purchased Wiiware games and saved game data, the save files for the games that you have played on the Wii.
To fully back up your Wii, you'll want to transfer both types of data. However, you can easily pick and choose between the data types. Here, we'll assume that you want to transfer everything.
3. Turn off your Wii. Insert your SD card into the SD card slot on the front of the Wii console. The card slot is a small, thin opening next to the Wii's Game Disk Slot. The SD Card's label faces the Wii's Game Disk Slot.
4. Turn on the Wii. First, transfer the Wii channel data by select the "Wii Settings" icon from the Wii menu screen.
5. Select "Data Management" on the Wii Settings screen.
6. Select "Wii Channels" from the "Data Management" screen. A list of your Wii channels appears.
7. Select the channels to save to the SD drive, then select "Copy."
8. Select "Yes" to the question "Copy to SD Card." The channel files are quickly copied to the SD card.
9. Press the "Home" button on the Wii remote to return to the Wii Menu screen. Transfer your Saved Game files to the SD Card by selecting the "Wii Settings" icon from the Wii menu screen.
10. Select "Data Management" on the Wii Settings screen. The Data Management screen appears.
11. Select "Save Data" then select the "Wii" tab on the Data Management screen. An icon list of your saved game data appears.
12. Select the saved game files that you want to copy.
13. Select "Yes" to the question "Copy to SD Card." The save files are quickly copied to the SD card.
14. Turn off the Wii. Remove the SD card by pressing on the card in the SD card slot.
Transferring the Wii SD Card Data to a USB Drive
15. Place the card into an SD Card Reader connected to your PC. An SD Card Reader plugs into your computer's USB port and transfers the data from your card to your computer. If you don't have an SD card reader, you can purchase one at retail stores for around $10.
16. From your "My Computer" screen, copy the data on the SD card to your external USB hard drive or flash drive.
17.Verify that the data is copied to your USB drive. If so, your Wii data is now backed up on the USB drive. If you wish to re-use your SD card, you can safely delete the Wii files from it.
