Motorcycle Helmet Information

A motorcycle helmet is specialized for the sport and designed to protect your head in the event of a motorcycle related accident. Just as you wouldn't wear a baseball cap on a construction site, a helmet made specifically for motorcycling is the only helmet you should wear.

Parts of a Helmet

A motorcycle helmet is made up of four main elements: a rigid outer shell, an impact-absorbing liner, a retaining chin strap system and comfort padding. Most helmet shells are constructed from fiberglass, Kevlar and on occasion, carbon-fiber.

How a Helmet Works

In the event of an accident, the kinetic energy of the impact transmitted to the wearer's brain is reduced by spreading it across the outer shell. Any residual energy is absorbed by compressing the liner while the retention chin straps keep the helmet secured.

Full-face Helmets

Full-face motorcycle helmets protect the rider's entire head and face with a clear visor to block wind, rain, and other elements. Racing helmets, always in full face design, are more aerodynamic to lessen wind resistance and ease neck strain.

Open face Helmets

Open face helmets are available as 3/4 shell or half-shell designs. 3/4 shell helmets are similar to full face designs, but only cover the top, side and rear of the head. Half-shell (or beanie) helmets cover only the top of the head and provide the least protection.

Certifications

U.S. states with helmet laws require the use of a DOT (Dept. of Transportation) certified helmet when riding. Snell-certified helmets must meet high standards and are considered to afford better protection. Novelty helmets do not meet the criteria and are not legal for road use.

U.S. Helmet Laws

Of the fifty states, only Idaho, New Hampshire, Iowa and Colorado do not have a motorcycle helmet law. Helmet laws in Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas only require young riders (ages 20 and below) to wear helmets.
