Select Golf Ball Compression

Golf ball compression determines how far your golf ball will fly depending on how hard you swing your club and how much you compress the golf ball when you swing. Golf balls usually have compression numbers associated with them, and the lower the number, the easier it is to compress the ball and get your maximum distance.

Instructions

1. Purchase and hit an 80 compression ball if you are a woman, a teenager or a smaller man. An 80 compression ball is the one to use if you are not usually a big hitter off the tee or when you have a clean shot off the fairway. An 80 compression ball is softer and will easily compress by the club face. The box the balls come in will not always be marked "80 compression," but you can tell because the writing (brand name) and number printed on the ball will be in red.

2. Use a 90 compression ball if you are an average-sized man or a very strong woman golfer. This ball is somewhat harder than the 80 compression and it takes more club-head speed at impact to compress the ball and send it down the fairway. But the 90 compression ball will travel farther down the fairway when struck properly than an 80 compression ball. If the balls are not marked "90 compression," you will be able to tell because the writing on the ball will be in black and the number will be in red.

3. Purchase a 100 compression ball if you are a very long hitter and have a powerful swing. It takes a big swing to compress this ball fully to get the maximum distance. Touring pros regularly use 100 compression golf balls because they generate so much club-head speed at impact. A golfer who does not have a big swing and does not generate much club-head speed should not use this ball because he will not be able to get good distance off his shots. A 100 compression ball is noted by black writing (brand name) and black numbers on the ball.

4. Go with the smaller compression balls if you have any doubt. You might want to impress your friends and playing partners by breaking out the 100 compression balls on the first tee, but that would be a mistake unless you regularly bomb the ball down the fairway 275 yards or more. You are playing for fun and for yourself, not to impress your playing partners.

5. Remember that the higher the number, the harder the ball. That means a 100 compression ball is harder to hit to get maximum distance unless you swing the club with great force.
