The VQ 500 is a 5-megapixel ultraportable digital camera developed by VistaQuest and released in 2008. The VQ 500 is a budget model intended for photographers looking for a small and light camera that's easy to carry around and easy to afford. It features a color LCD screen, built-in flash and an integrated memory card slot.


Dimensions and Weight


The VQ 500 measures 3.54 inches wide, 2.28 inches tall and 0.79 inches thick with its lens retracted. It weighs 8 oz. including the pair of 1.5-volt AAA batteries that provide power to the camera. VistaQuest sells the VQ 500 bundled with a separate key chain image viewer. The image viewer measures 1.18 inches wide, 2.72 inches tall and 0.61 inches thick. Both the camera and the image viewer come in red, blue or pink rigid plastic housings with silver accents.


Lens and Imaging


The VQ 500's 5-megapixel sensor takes images at resolutions up to 2,560-by-1,920 pixels. The VQ 500's lens has an equivalent focal length of 8 millimeters. It has an 8x digital zoom accessible in both preview and playback modes. The camera's autofocus lens has a variable shutter speed that ranges from one second to one one-hundredth of a second. The camera features both automatic and manual exposure settings as well as automatic and manual white balance. The VQ 500 also captures video in either VGA or QVGA resolution.


Display and Controls


VistaQuest outfitted the VQ 500 with a 1.5-inch color TFT active matrix LCD screen on the rear of the camera. The camera has an eyecup viewfinder as well. A four-way toggle switch is located to the right of the camera's LCD screen, providing access to scene modes, flash presets and other on-camera controls. A main menu switch and small, integrated speaker are found above the four-way control. The battery access hatch is on the right side of the camera, the rubber-covered USB connection on the left.








Additional Information


The VQ 500 has 32 megabytes (MB) of internal flash memory, 28MB of which is available to the user for storing photos. For additional storage, the camera also features an integrated memory card slot compatible with Secure Digital memory cards. When taking photos, the VQ 500 stores image data to the JPEG file format. When taking videos, the camera stores data to the MPJEG format. The camera is compatible with the Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. It's also compatible with MacOS 9.0 or later.
