Get Rid Of Red Eyes

Red eyes can be the result of too much computer time.

"There are a variety of reasons you can develop bloodshot eyes, ranging from eyestrain and fatigue to colds and allergies," says Dr. Kristie Leong. Red eyes can even be the result of cold weather or a severe weather change that reduces the amount of moisture in the air. Occasionally it indicates a more serious health problem. However, if you've found yourself staying up way too late or staying on the computer for hours at a time, then it's likely a simple case of strained eyes. If you haven't experienced any other problem with your eyes, then your eyes are likely begging for a little attention and relaxation.

Instructions

1. Use artificial tears to moisten the mucus membrane--artificial tears are closer to your natural tears than other eye drops. Lean your head back and put several drops into each eye. Close your eyes for a minute or two to let the solution saturate each eye thoroughly. Place your hands over each eye with your fingers on your forehead; the bottom of your hands should be placed on each cheek. Hold this position for a minute or two to let your eyes rest.

2. Install a humidifier in your house to moisten the air in the winter. Place it in the room you use most often or close to a heating duct. Fill it with water often.

3. Avoid smoke or smoking. Install an air cleaner to keep air fresh and to remove any impurities. Avoid harsh chemicals. Rinse eyes with cold water to wash out any impurities. Take a long cleansing bath with Epsom salts to help get rid of toxins.

4. Avoid whatever action caused the red eyes to occur. For example, if you went to a nightclub or swam in a pool, then realize this action may have contributed to the red eyes. Take steps to prevent future red eyes, i.e. goggles at the pool, more fresh air at the club.

5. Get a frozen pack of vegetables from the refrigerator freezer or a cold washcloth filled with ice. Lie down on a couch or a bed. Close your eyes and place the pack of vegetables or washcloth on your eyes. Lie still for 15 minutes to let the moisture saturate your eyes. The cold will shrink the blood vessels.

6. Limit your computer time. Set a timer to make sure you take breaks on a regular basis when on the computer. Sit closer to the computer. Purchase a filter for the screen to reduce eyestrain.

7. Get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Drink at least 40 ounces of water each day.
