Fix Computers That Turn Themselves Off

Energy conservation is a topic that frequently comes up when discussing proper computer power management. Leaving your laptop on constantly can drain the battery and decrease its overall life. Leaving your desktop computer running can drain a lot of power and raise your electric bills. However, many people use their computers as file servers and need them running all of the time. Many computer and operating system manufacturers have set default power options that put the computer to sleep after a short period of inactivity. Fortunately, it is possible to turn this feature off.

Instructions

1. Click the "Start" or Windows button in the lower left corner of the screen, then select the "Control Panel" option.

2. Double click the "Power Options" setting, which will open a new screen titled "Select a power plan".

3. Click the "Change plan settings" link that is next to the power plan you are using. If you would like to prevent your computer from going to sleep under any circumstance, then you will need to perform these steps for each power plan.

4. Click the "Change advanced power settings" link, then click the "+" sign next to the word "Sleep". Click the "+" sign next to "Sleep After," and then select the "Never" option. If you are using a laptop computer, then you will need to set the "Never" option at this point for "On battery" and "Plugged in."

5. Click the "Apply" button, then click the "OK" button.
