Deer Control Devices

Home gardens make for easy meals for deer.

One of the most destructive creatures for gardens and lawns is the deer. Although deer are typically a docile animal, their fondness for plants and vegetables in home gardens make them quite a nuisance. Left unchecked, deer will eat any and all of your plants and vegetables that they find appealing. There are some ways to help manage the deer around your home and garden. Some of the methods are simple devices, while others are much more sophisticated.

Flood Lights

Deer often graze in yards and garden at night, when the cover of darkness gives them added protection. One way to combat this is to install flood lights around the area of your yard or garden that they are invading. Since deer do not usually wish to venture into well-lit areas at night, they will often avoid the area completely. You can add a motion detector to your lights so you do not have to leave the lights on all night, which your neighbors will appreciate. The motion detector will turn the light on when a deer enters the area, and the sudden burst of light will startle the deer and cause them to leave the area immediately.

Motion Activated Sprinklers

Another way to deter deer from wandering into certain areas is to get them wet. Since you will not usually be able to get close enough to them to do this, you need a motion activated sprinkler (such as the SCARECROW). The motion activated sprinkler looks like a normal yard sprinkler, except that is has a motion sensor installed just below the sprinkler nozzle. You stake the sprinkler in the yard or garden area, hook a water hose to it, and turn it on. The sprinkler is powered by a 9-volt battery, and can be set to go off at ranges of 10, 20 and 30 feet. Once a deer enters the area, the motion sensor detects the movement, and begins spraying water in that direction.

Ultrasonic Motion Activated Repeller

Another device used to control deer is an ultrasonic repeller. The ultrasonic repeller works by emitting a high-pitched noise that annoys the deer and prompts them to leave the area. Ultrasonic repellers can be adjusted from 5,000 to 25,000 Hz, which is out of the normal range of human hearing. The repeller is also mounted on a motion sensor, so it does not have to stay on all the time. The motion detector will set off the ultrasonic noise blast when a deer enters the 70-foot range. The device can be attached to a tree, stake, or fence post in the area you wish to safeguard.
