Sony's line of compact and SLR digital cameras use Memory Stick Pro Duo.
The Memory Stick is Sony Corporation's proprietary memory card format, intended for use in a variety of Sony cameras, phones and computers. Released in 2006, the Memory Stick's latest version, the Memory Stick Pro Duo and its variant, the Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, offer increased storage capacity and faster transfer speeds for Sony's compact digital cameras and digital SLRs.
The Sony Memory Stick Line
In 1998, Sony Corporation launched the Memory Stick, a proprietary product designed to provide memory storage for Sony products including cell phones, video game players and computers, as well as digital cameras and camcorders. The original Memory Stick led to the development of the Memory Stick Pro, then the Memory Stick Duo. The next generation of the Memory Stick line, the Pro Duo, is a compact memory storage device intended for use in digital cameras. In collaboration with SanDisk, Sony also marketed the Pro-HG Duo, with speeds up to three times faster than the original Memory Stick Pro.
Sony Compact Digital Cameras
The Memory Stick Pro Duo is used in Sony's CyberShot line of compact, or "point and shoot" digital cameras. Relatively new models, such as the Sony CyberShot DSC H70 and the DSC TX9, require the Pro Duo, which offers a high-speed mode for faster storage.
Sony DSLRs
Sony Alpha, Sony's entire line of entry-level, "prosumer" and professional-level Digital SLRs, also uses the Memory Stick Pro Duo. Models such as the Alpha DSLR A230 and its higher-end cousin, the A330, require the Pro Duo, as does the NEX-5 and numerous other variants. These products may also use the Pro-HG Duo. Both types of Memory Stick are available with and without the high-speed mode.
Compatibility
Other variants of the Memory Stick are used in Sony's other digital products, which include video game players, camcorders and some cell phones. The Memory Stick Pro Duo and Pro-HG Duo are intended for use with newer (post-2006) models in Sony's line of digital cameras. Users of older models of these devices may need to check with dealerships about compatibility with the Pro Duo or Pro-HG Duo memory sticks.
