Bearcat Keypad Tips & Tricks

A Bearcat scanner can pick up signals from emergency and fire stations.

A Bearcat scanner lets you listen to police, weather and emergency radio stations. You use the keypad on a Bearcat to input information and program frequencies into the scanner. Use the keypad effectively by accessing weather channels with the "WX" button, entering similar frequencies into adjacent channels and locking out channels from the lowest to the highest using the "L/O" key.

Program Frequencies Using the Keypad

Frequencies need to be programmed into your Bearcat scanner before it can receive radio broadcasts. Use the keypad to program your Bearcat by selecting a frequency from the Bearcat Starting Frequency Guide that came with your scanner. Press the "Manual" key, enter the number for the channel you want to put the frequency into, and press the "Manual" key again. You can also enter the channel number by pressing the Up, Down or "Manual" keys until the channel number shows on the display. Enter the frequency number using the keypad and press the "E" key.

Programming Tips

You don't have to program weather frequencies, because weather channels transmit continuously. Instead, press the "WX" weather key to listen to weather information. Make listening to frequencies easier by entering similar frequencies into channels that are next to each other. For example, program fire or emergency frequencies into channels 1 through 4 and police frequencies into channels 5 through 9. Make programming many channels at one time easier by starting with the channel that has the lowest number. For example, if you are programming channels 3 though 7, start with channel 3. After you are finished programming that channel, move to channel 4 and then move to the next higher channel until you are done.

Channel Lockout

Block out a channel from being viewed during normal scanning by locking it out. At any time, you can restore a locked-out channel to scanning. Lock out a channel by pressing the "Manual" key and entering the number of the channel you want to lock out. Press the "Manual" key again and press the "L/O" key.

Lockout Tips

Quickly place a series of channels in lockout by starting with the lowest channel. For example, start with channel 3 if you are locking out channels 3, 4, 6 and 8. Select channel 3 and press the "L/O" key. Press the "Manual" key until you get to the next channel you want to lock out and press the "L/O" key again. Keep a record of the channels you have locked out so you can restore them later.
