Use Multiple Camera Lenses

Use Multiple Camera Lenses

This article will show you how and when to use multiple camera lenses while photographing. You'll learn switch between lenses and minimize dust entering your camera while switching. This article will outline camera settings and shooting situations for various lenses.

Instructions

Using multiple lenses in photography

1. Pick the different lenses you want to use. While photographing, different lenses can provide a wide variety of shots. It is helpful to be able to switch between them quickly and efficiently and know when to use which lens.

2. To switch your lens, first make sure the camera's strap is around your neck so you don't fumble the camera. Have your other lens nearby (held between your legs, in your pocket or on a table) before you make the switch.

3. Unscrew the back cap from the lens that will be fitted to the camera. For many cameras/lenses, the cap must be turned to the right to loosen it.

4. Put the lens cap on the lens and point the camera body toward the ground to reduce dust entering the camera. Press the camera release button on the front of the camera. On Nikon cameras, this button is located on the left side of the lens, just below the camera model number. Turn the lens to the right and remove it from the body.

5. Place the removed lens to the side and grab the new lens to be fastened to the camera. Line up the white dot on the lens with the white dot on the camera body, insert the lens and turn it to the left about a quarter turn. A click will be heard when the lens is in place. Put the back cap on the removed lens to protect it.

6. Using a variety of lenses will produce a variety of different pictures. Some lenses have different aperture settings (which affect how much light is let in) and other options, such as stabilization. The most noticeable difference will be the width of the shot. Wide-angle lenses can capture a vast mountain scene, while telephoto lenses allow you to zoom in to a tighter area of the scene. Using a telephoto lens to zoom in on a subject will produce a blurred background, which is sometimes desirable. Macro lenses allow you to take extreme close-ups and photograph things like insects with great detail. Experiment and get to know your lenses and you'll get a feel for which ones to use when.
