Eliminate Lens Flare

To eliminate lens flare, you need both equipment and technique.

When you shoot pictures with an SLR camera in the sunlight, sometimes the sun reflects off the lens, causing spots in the resulting picture. These spots are called lens flare, and although sometimes lens flare is used to create effects in pictures, it's not always a desired result. Eliminating lens flare completely takes a combination of hardware and technique. Not only does it help to have certain equipment to eliminate lens flare, but you also should adjust the way you shoot. The result will be lens-flare-free images.

Instructions

1. Attach a lens hood to the end of the lens by twisting it onto the end of the lens until it locks in place. Make sure the deepest parts of the hood are on the top and bottom of the lens.

2. Use your hand to shield the sun out from the lens by holding it over the end of the lens in a cupping motion. Zoom in on your subject if you're shooting with a zoom lens to try to eliminate any flare in the corners of the image.

3. Move your shooting position so something is blocking the sun from reflecting on your lens. Switch your shooting angle if possible to adjust for the sun.
