Whether you're announcing your new business, advertising an upcoming yard sale, trying to recruit visitors to your open house or letting your community know about paving issues, an eye-catching way to spread the news is through a sign. Signs come in just about every variety of color, size, shape and design possible. Instead of spending big bucks on a custom-designed sign from a graphics shop, make your own on your computer. Your system comes installed with the Paint software, a drawing and sketching program you can use to make your own signs for printing.

Instructions

1. Open Paint, pull down the "Image" menu and click "Attributes." Set your preferred sign dimensions. For a standard copy paper page sign, set the size to 8.5 inches by 11 inches and click the "OK" button.

2. Click the "Text" tool, which looks like an "A" and is located on the "Tools" palette. Position your cursor on the sign either at the top or in the middle and click; if the text toolbar doesn't appear, pull down the "View" menu and click "Text Toolbar." Select a big, bold font such as Arial Black or Elephant and increase the font size to 200.

3. Type the sign's message, such as "Voting Location Here," "Yard Sale Saturday," "Incoming traffic does not stop" or "Call for Piano Lessons."

4. Reduce font size and add additional information, such as an address of the event, phone number or contact information for people to reach you or a description of the item you're advertising.

5. Click the "Paintbrush" tool, select the medium square brush head and (optionally) a color from the "Color Picker" at the bottom of the screen. Draw a design on the sign, such as an exclamation point, light bulb or smiley face.

6. Give your sign a colored background by choosing a new color from the "Color Picker" at the bottom of the screen, clicking the "Paint Bucket" tool and clicking inside the white space of the sign, which then fills with the color.

7. Pull down the "File" menu and click "Save As." Give the sign a name and a destination to save it to on your computer, where you'll be able to find it when you're ready to print. Click "Save."
