Buy A Memory Stick Duo Usb Adapter

Memory Stick Duo cards, also called MS Duo cards, are produced by Sony, and widely used in Sony cameras and other digital devices. While the format is compatible between Sony products, it is unfortunately not compatible with all PC and Mac card readers. If your computer does not have a reader capable of using a MS Duo card, a USB adapter is often the best choice. USB adapters work on most computers, and do not require the costly hardware installation necessary for a full card reader upgrade. When buying a Memory Stick Duo USB adapter, there are several important factors to consider.

Instructions

1. Make sure the USB adapter is compatible with USB 2.0 connections. Brand new Memory Stick Duo USB adapters will almost always be compatible with USB 2.0 ports, but if you're buying an older adapter from a secondhand store or online auction, check the packaging or ask the seller about 2.0 compatibility.

2. Look for adequate data transfer speeds. While all USB adapters will allow for computer usage of a MS Duo card, not all adapters will provide the same usage speed. Check the product specs for read speeds of at least 4.0 MB/s and write speeds of at least 1.0 MB/s. Ratings of 4.0 MB/s and 1.0 MB/s are the bare minimum, useful for very basic connections, but are not ideal for professional photographers needing quick transfer rates. Higher read and write speeds provide optimal transfer rates of data.

3. Look for adapters that are compatible with all types of MS Duo cards. As you upgrade your digital devices or purchase new Sony products in the future, you don't want to have to continually purchase new USB adapters. A good adapter will work with the original "Memory Stick" model, as well as the newer "Memory Stick Duo" and "Memory Stick Duo Pro" models.

4. Consider buying a Sony brand adapter for the best performance. As the manufacturer or MS Duo cards, Sony is a trusted provider of MS Duo accessories. While generic adapters will cost you $5 or $10 less than the Sony USB adapter's $14.99 list price (as of 2009), these products often feature lower transfer speeds and very limited warranties. Sony's adapters are top notch, offering impressive 20.0 MB/s read speeds and 15.0 MB/s write speeds, according to Adorama.com, ranking these adapters well above the data transfer minimums mentioned in Step 2.

5. Consider package deals. If you're also in the market for a new Memory Stick Duo along with your MS Duo USB adapter, package deals can save you money over the cost of purchasing each item separately. Adorama, an online photography retailer, offers 4GB and 8GB cards in package deals with Sony brand MS Duo USB adapters.
