Enlarge Megapixels

Resizing a photograph

At some point, most photographers will want to increase the size of an image they have captured. How do you go from a 4-by-6-inch print to a larger size--say, 5-by-7 or 8-by-10? The answer is interpolation, a process that Photoshop uses to add more pixels when resizing images. Interpolation software will examine the photograph and add more pixels based on the color of the original pixels. Be aware that interpolation may lower the quality of the original image, so it may not be possible to resize the image to make it as big as you intend.

Instructions

1. Open Photoshop on your computer. Choose "File" from the top menu. Select "Open" from the drop-down menu and open an image you wish to enlarge.

2. Choose "Image" from the top menu, then select "Image Size" from the drop-down menu. This will open the "Image Size" option box. "Pixel Dimensions" and "Document Size" are now displayed for the current photograph.

3. Locate the three boxes at the bottom left of the "Image Size" option box. Ensure that "Scale Styles," "Constrain Proportions" and "Resample Image" have all been checked. Choose "Bicubic Smoother" from the drop-down menu box located at the bottom of the option box.

4. Refer back to the "Document Size" portion of the option box. Choose "Inches" from the two drop-down menus that are located to right of the "Width" and "Height" boxes. Resize the image to the larger size desired by increasing the numbers in the "Width" and "Height" boxes.

5. Know that, since the "Constrain Image" box had been checked earlier, Photoshop will automatically constrain the image to its original proportions when you increase image size. Uncheck the "Constrain Image" box if you wish to change the proportions of your image.

6. Choose the "OK" button when your resizing changes have been made. Photoshop will now resize your photograph. Repeat the above steps if the new image is not what you desired.
