You've been enjoying satellite radio in your car for a while. It keeps you entertained on the daily commute without the never-ending commercials of broadcast radio. You recently decided that you'd like satellite radio in your house as well, but aren't sure what you'll need. Here are some easy, relatively inexpensive options for routing satellite radio to your home.
Instructions
Plug-n-play to Home Audio System
1. Get a home kit. If you are using an add-on satellite radio receiver in your car, it's probably a plug-n-play receiver, which can easily be transferred from car to home. You'll need an existing home stereo system with analog (left and right) audio inputs. Follow steps below.
2. Set up a home kit. This kit comes with everything you'll need to set your satellite radio up and hook it to a home audio system. Ideally, you'll want to set it up near a window that faces in the appropriate direction for your provider (South for XM, see Resources for Sirius). You may be able to get a signal through the wall or roof, so adjust the antenna and move it around to get the strongest signal. Connect the antenna into the receiver's antenna input.
3. Dock the receiver. Hook the audio cable from the receiver's output to the left and right inputs of your home audio system. Connect the power cord to the receiver and plug it into an electrical outlet.
4. Turn your home audio system and satellite radio receiver on. Switch your home audio receiver to the input source selection that corresponds to where you connected your satellite receiver (e.g. "Aux 1", "Tuner"). Assuming you have an active subscription, you're now ready to listen to satellite at home.
Plug-n-play to Boombox/Dock
5. Use a boombox or dock. If you have a plug-n-play receiver in your vehicle and don't have a home audio system, you can purchase a boombox or dock to listen to satellite radio.
6. Connect the plug-n-play receiver to dock.
7. Set up antenna and plug in. You now have a portable satellite radio to play in your home.
