Nikon P5000 Vs P5100

The Nikon P5000 and P5100 are both part of Nikon's Coolpix line of compact digital cameras. The small consumer cameras are designed for people who are looking for an affordable pocket-sized point-and-shoot camera that can take fairly high resolution photographs that can later be printed out, or shared with friends on the Web. While the Nikon P5000 and P5100 are exceptionally similar cameras, there arr also several differences between the two models.

Megapixel Resolution

The Nikon P5000 takes pictures at a 10-megapixel resolution. The Nikon P5100 takes pictures at a slightly higher 12.1-megapixel resolution. The difference in megapixel resolution between the two cameras would not be noticeable on the Web or in traditional 4-by-6-inch prints, but would become visable when making prints over 11-by-16-inch size, or when cropping small parts of a picture and attempting to enlarge them and turn them into their own photograph.

Improved Face Detection

Both the Nikon P5000 and P5100 have face detection, allowing them to locate the faces of people within a picture and give priority to those faces over other things that might be in the picture. The Nikon P5000 can detect up to eight faces in a picture, where as the Nikon P5100 can detect up to 12 individual faces. Nikon also claims to have upgraded the hardware in the P5100, allowing it to find those faces 10 times faster than the P5000 could.

Black Border

The Nikon P5100 added a feature allowing users to put a black border around photographs that they may take, which the Nikon P5000 did not have. Typically a black border would be used on artistic pictures, or other types of pictures where you want a slight border or background surrounding the photo itself.

Continuous Mode

The Nikon P5100 added a continuous mode that was not found on the Nikon P5000. A continuous mode allows you to hold down the shutter button and take several photographs one after the other. The Nikon P5100 is capable of taking pictures at 0.8 frames per second, meaning you can take slightly less than one picture per second while in this mode.

1:1 Ratio

The Nikon P5100 added a feature that allows users to take pictures in a 1:1 ratio. Pictures taken in this ratio will essentially look like squares, and will be the same size on each size rather than the traditional 2:3 photo look. The Nikon P5000 does not have the ability to take pictures in a 1:1 ratio.
