Hardwire A Gps To A Motorcycle

GPS helps you determine where you are.

For motorcyclists, checking a map used to mean finding a safe place to stop, extending the kick stand, rummaging through seats to find a map and spending extra time to read it. A GPS can save motorcyclists time and headaches, but its wires can be an eyesore. A moderately handy motorcyclist with a small tool kit can eliminate this problem and hard-wire a motorcycle-enabled GPS using a mounting kit and a few tools in an hour.

Instructions

1. Remove the passenger's seat. To do so, turn the bolts on the rear of the seat counterclockwise and lift the seat from the motorcycle. Repeat this process for the rider's seat.

2. Identify the negative and positive battery terminal and remove their cables from the battery. Turn on the motorcycle's electronics without starting the engine. This will drain all additional electricity in the motorcycle. Wait approximately five minutes and then turn off the electronics.

3. Remove the fuel tank. To do so, disconnect the fuel line from the left side of the tank and wrap it in a shop towel to prevent leaking. Disconnect the electrical connection to the fuel pump and find the bolt at the rear of the fuel tank and remove it. Remove the fuel tank by pulling back and up. Check to see if there are any additional connections to the tank and place the tank on shop towels away from the work area to prevent damage.

4. Mount the GPS to the handlebar according to the instructions on the handlebar mounting kit. GPS devices compatible with motorcycles, such as the TomTom Rider, detail specific instructions in the manufacturer's manual on hard-wire the GPS from this point. In most cases, an Allen wrench is required to separate the pieces of the handlebar while installing and mounting the GPS.

5. Replace the fuel tank by repeating Step 3 in reverse. Secure the cables and connections to the battery terminal and fuel tank.

6. Replace the motorcycle seats by reversing Step 2.

7. Power the device and follow software setup methods indicated by the GPS device model's manufacturer.
