Install A Media Card Reader

A media card reader allows removable memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, portable video game systems, cell phones, and other devices to be read and accessed on a desktop or laptop computer. All-in-one media card readers allow various types of media cards to be read and the files on them to be accessed. Common types of media cards include MicroSD cards, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, and Smart Media.

Instructions

1. Purchase an all-in-one media card reader from an electronics or computer store. See Resources for examples of these USB media card readers. A lot of USB connection media card readers can be purchased for under $20. Before purchasing a reader, make sure the reader can support the types of media cards that you commonly use. You can determine the type of card in your device (such as a camera) by consulting the device's user manual or by removing the media card and reading the information printed on the card.

2. Connect the media card reader device to an available USB port on your computer or laptop. USB 2.0 ports work the best for media card readers, as they allow for faster data transfer speeds. If your media card reader came with an external power supply, connect the power supply to a power outlet, then connect the USB cable to the computer. Turn the media card reader on if there is a power switch on the power supply or card reader.

3. Wait a few seconds for the computer to "discover" and recognize the device. You may be prompted to run a driver install program or software. If any software came with the card reader, insert the disc and run the program. If prompted to install drivers or search for drivers, click "Yes" or "OK", and allow the computer to search for and install needed drivers. Some computers will have drivers already installed or will simply recognize the media card reader as a plug-and-play device. If this is the case, the reader will work as soon as it is plugged in. You may be prompted to restart your computer if any drivers or software needed to be installed.
