Install A Satellite Radio Antenna

The biggest concern for potential satellite radio users is the installation of the radio antenna and dressing the cable properly, from the exterior of the car to the interior. By following the manufacturer's guidelines and taking a little time, you will be able to install a satellite radio antenna that will obtain the clearest signal and be unobtrusive to the appearance of your vehicle.

Instructions

Install a Satellite Radio Antenna

1. Find the proper location to mount the magnetic antenna for your satellite radio receiver. You should install the antenna at the highest point of your car, so that it will be able to pick up the satellite signal clearly in all directions. If you mount the antenna on the side of the car, on the trunk or on the dashboard, you will block the signal as the car moves, causing the broadcasts to drop out.

2. Space the antenna at least 3 inches from the edge of any door, window or hatch, using the supplied 3-inch rubber boot to cover the exposed section of cable. Make sure the antenna is also at least 3 inches away from any other object on the roof, such as a third brake light or another radio antenna.

3. Pry the rubber molding along the window closest to the antenna with a putty knife, and route the cable into the exposed channel to the closest point of the trunk or hatch. Route the cable into the car, taking care not to allow kinks or bends in the cable and avoid hinges. Replace the rubber molding, taking care not to pinch or crush the wire.

4. Use the putty knife to dress the cable along the interior molding and carpeting inside the car, which will help to hide and protect the cable as you route it toward the receiver location at the front of your car. Avoid any spot where side airbags might be stored or the cable may be pinched.

5. Continue to route the cable until you get to the firewall underneath the dashboard. Bring it out to dress it, along the other wiring, to the location of the satellite radio receiver. Carefully coil up any excess cable neatly, making sure that you do not bend or crimp the wire.
