Geocode Addresses

Geocoding turns street addresses into longitude and latitude readings.

Geocoding is the practice of converting street addresses into geographical coordinates. The data generated through geocoding is used for business analysis, criminal investigations and scientific study. Geocoded data is also used for creating maps and marking locations of interest. There are many services for geocoding batches of addresses that limit the user to a number of requests per day or charges a fee depending on the number of addresses in the request. If the user wants to geocode just one address at a time, there is a website that geocodes for free.

Instructions

1. Visit the Geocoder website and type the street address into text field under the heading "Look up an Address". Click "Search".

2. Click "Search" for a geocoding of the entered address. The new page features the address, geographical coordinates and a basic map of the address.

3. Record the full address, latitude and longitude of the entry. Geocoder provides the basic information required for geocoding. If the user seeks more refined information such as county, region and voting district, a professional service should be contacted.
