Nikon D40 Quick Facts

The Nikon D40 is a digital SLR marketed toward photography enthusiasts and hobbyists.


The D40 is a consumer grade digital single lens reflex camera manufactured by Nikon. The Nikon D40 body supports interchangeable Nikon and Nikkor lenses and synchronizes with external flash units.


Image Size


The Nikon D40 is equipped with a 6.1 megapixel sensor and a final output image of 2000-by-3008 pixels. Images can be printed up to 8-by-10 inches at 300dpi, which is considered "print quality."


ISO Sensitivity


Digital ISO sensitivity is the equivalent of film speed; film speed relates to the size of film grain and light sensitivity, which in this case is digital noise. The Nikon D40 has an ISO range of 200 to 3200 and works well in low-light conditions.


Shutter Speed


Shutter speed refers to the amount of time the shutter is left open, exposing the digital sensor to a light source. The Nikon D40 has a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds for extended exposures and a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 for shooting fast action.
