Firewire To Usb For Apple Mac

You can connect a Firewire device to the USB port on your Mac with the right adapter cable.

Firewire was once a popular technology for connecting devices such as digicams and cameras to the Macintosh computer. Recents Macs generally don't include Firewire ports but you can still attach a Firewire device to your Mac using a Firewire to USB adapter cable.

Firewire to USB Adapter Cable

A Firewire to USB cable has a Firewire connection at one end of the cable -- for connection to the Firewire device -- and a USB connection at the other end -- for connection to the computer. In between is an adapter that converts the Firewire signal to a USB signal.

Where to Find

Only a few companies make Firewire to USB adapter cables, including Sima and Tripp Lite. Prices range from $20 to $60, as of September 2010. Stores such as Best Buy and Walmart sometimes stock Firewire to USB cables, and they can also be found online.

Warning

Don't confuse a Firewire to USB adapter cable with a USB/Firewire Hub. A USB/Firewire Hub will not allow you to attach your Firewire device to your Mac using your USB port. It is actually two separate ports combined into a single device for convenience and does not convert Firewire signals into USB signals.
