Time lapse photography is a cinematography technique in which a photographer shoots a large number of images of a single object or location over a period of time. These images are then compiled to produce a video showcasing the natural progression of time. Unlike a normal video, time lapse production uses a collection of still images that create a staggered sequence of events compared to the fluid motion you would receive from a video camera.
Instructions
1. Secure the Canon EOS 1000D to the tripod to ensure that it stays fixed pointing at the same object or location. Set the camera to shoot in JPEG format in the menu and then quality settings. This will save space on the memory card and ensure that you don't run out of space.
2. Take the white balance setting off automatic and select a pre-programmed setting of daylight, shade, cloudy, tungsten light, white fluorescent light or flash depending on your light surroundings. Alternatively, you can manually adjust the white balance through the custom option.
3. Set the Canon EOS 1000D to manual mode. Adjust the aperture and shutter speeds according to your requirements. Longer shutter speeds (or exposures) will create a more staggered final video and shorter shutter speeds will result in a smoother video. Coincide this with your aperture setting to ensure that you are letting the correct amount of light into the lens. A smaller aperture will make your images darker and a larger aperture will make them brighter. This may take a number of practice shots to get the right balance.
4. Plug the intervalometer into the camera. This will allow you to shoot your images while standing back from your equipment. If available, set the length of time you plan to be shooting. Now you have the option of automatic or manual operation. If you are shooting for a long time or want minimal time delay between images, select automatic. If you want control over when the images are captured, select manual. This will require you to press the shoot button on the intervalometer every time you want to capture an image.
5. Download all the images into the same folder on your computer. The images may or may not need editing through in a photographic software programs. Open your video editing software and either select or drag your images into their desired order. You can add time delays on each image if you would like to make the video appear more staggered.
