Camcorders often have extra functions to help make better movies.
The LANC, A/V-in and out ports on camcorders increase the functionality of the equipment. Because these interfaces are not exclusive to Sony, their features are compatible with other equipment.
LANC
Use a LANC port to plug in a device, or integrated tripod control, that operates the camera remotely. Remote controls eliminate the need to press buttons on the unit during filming. This feature prevents camera movements that could ruin a recording.
A/V-In
You can import audio and visual footage (from another camera, for example) using an A/V-in port, but don't use it to record live audio with an external microphone. Some models, such as the Sony DCR-TRV 350, have an A/V-in port with analog capability. This handy feature enables the transfer of film, such as Super 8, to digital format.
A/V-Out
Use an A/V cable to connect a camcorder to a TV.
A cable connects the A/V-out port on the camcorder to a monitor or projector, in order to view filmed footage. Linking this to the A/V sockets on a TV or projector allows you to view the action during filming and to play back recordings directly from the camera. Some Sony camcorders require jacks; others use 10-pin connectors.
