Fix A Blurry Picture On A Digital Camera

Using a faster shutter speed would have made this image sharper.

A blurry photograph is the result of a slow shutter speed setting. If your camera's shutter speed is set to 1/30 of a second or slower, you are likely to create a blurry image if you are holding the camera by hand. Because blur can be difficult to fix in an image-editing program, there are steps you can take to reduce the amount of blur in your images in-camera.

Instructions

1. Use a Shutter-Speed Priority or Manual mode on your camera. Shutter Speed Priority allows you to choose your desired shutter speed while the camera chooses the aperture. Manual mode lets you choose both exposure settings if you are capable of reading your camera's light meter. Set your camera's shutter speed to 1/60 of a second or faster to reduce the chance of creating a blurry picture.

2. Choose a higher ISO setting if you are using an Automatic exposure mode. The ISO refers to the camera's sensitivity to light. Increase this setting to a fast speed such as 800 or 1600. This makes your camera's sensor more sensitive to light which allows it to choose faster shutter speeds, in turn reducing picture blur.

3. Use a tripod if you are making pictures in low light. It may not be possible to choose fast enough shutter speeds if you are working in very dim conditions. Put your camera on a tripod so that it is perfectly still during long shutter speeds. This freezes the motion of stationary objects though objects in motion may still appear blurry.

4. Brace yourself against a wall or place the camera on the ground if you do not have a tripod. You can use relatively slow shutter speeds if you try to keep yourself as still as possible or place the camera on a stable surface.

5. Use your camera's timer setting. In this mode, you can make an exposure without pressing the shutter release button -- an action which can further create blur during very slow shutter speeds. Enter your camera's menu settings to select the timer mode. Place the camera on a flat surface and press the shutter release button once to activate the timer. After a set amount of time the camera makes an exposure without you pressing the button.
