Transferring your video is the first step to using your video.
Digital video has put quality filmmaking within the grasp of even low-budget hobbyists. Editing the video via non-linear editing software makes almost anything possible. Transferring the video from the camera to your computer's hard drive is a fairly easy process, especially with modern cameras that provide the option of USB streaming. In addition to your favorite video footage, you will need a USB cable to fit the USB out port on your camera.
Instructions
1. Insert your videotape or media card into the camera and turn the power on. Select the playback or VCR mode of your camera. Rewind the tape or find and select the file you want to transfer. Consult your camera manual for specific instructions. Plug the USB cable into the USB out port on your camera. Plug the other end into the number-one USB port on your computer.
2. Start your non-linear video editing software. Procedures vary slightly from program to program. In general, open your program menu and select your video editing program. Go to the "file" menu and find the option for capturing video from a digital camera. These options are typically labeled "capture video from digital camera," or "capture digital video from device." Consult your software's help files or manual for specifics.
3. Select your camera from the list of devices provided by your software. A control panel with play, rewind, fast-forward and capture or record options will come up next. Select the record or capture option. Choose the clips you want to transfer or choose to capture the entire file or tape. Name your video and select a file to save it to. Name it something that relates to the footage and save it in a new file in the video folder for easy location.
