Types Of Video Conferencing Systems

Videoconferencing systems make it easier for businesses to coordinate.

Videoconferencing is becoming an increasingly important part of business in the global era, as people working in different places find that their work is ever more tightly integrated with other people working on the other side of the world. If you run or work for a company that is planning on installing a videoconferencing system, it's a good idea to become aware of the different types of available systems to decide what kind might work best for you and your company's needs.

Group Videoconferencing Systems

Group videoconferencing systems are designed to allow an entire room full of people to take part in the conference at the same time. These are usually installed in conference rooms or classrooms. These systems are also sometimes referred to as integrated videoconferencing systems. Usually, all of the cameras for this system are permanently mounted in the conference area. Usually, a system such as this will consist of a large television screen that is centered on the table where the conference participants will be sitting. A camera will usually be placed atop the screen to film the participants. Omnidirectional microphones can also be placed into the table to pick up everyone's voices at the same tie.

Personal/Desktop Videoconferencing Systems

Personal/desktop videoconferencing systems allow participants to speak with each other from their own desks. These systems are usually installed on a personal computer. Computers being used must have audio capabilities and a solid Internet or network connection. Many desktop conferencing systems allow application program sharing, so that participants can share information between their computers.

Telepresence Videoconferencing Systems

Telepresence videoconferencing systems are designed to create the illusion of all the participants being present at the conference when they are actually not. This is usually achieved through the use of a high-definition codec and several high -definition display panels, as well as high-definition audio.

Set-Top Videoconferencing Systems

Set-top videoconferencing systems, also called appliance videoconferencing systems, are designed for use in smaller conference rooms. These systems can usually be installed onto a movable cart that can be rolled from room to room, allowing the location of each conference to be mobile.

Dedicated Videoconferencing Systems

Dedicated videoconferencing systems do everything a videoconferencing system needs to do, but have everything necessary for the system included in one unit. These systems can come in small, portable systems that one person at a time can use, or they can be large and nonportable.
