What Temperature Should an Attic Fan Be Set At?

What is an Attic Fan?

An attic fan is a small vent fan that is placed in the attic of a home. Attic fans are often confused with whole-house fans, which are meant to draw air up into the attic and ventilate an entire building. Attic fans are just meant to simply expel air from the attic into the outdoors. Most attic fans have a thermostat that regulates when they run and it is extremely important that an attic fan be set at a proper temperature to ensure optimal performance.

At What Temperature Should an Attic Fan Be Set?

The temperature at which an attic fan ought to be set differs, depending on climate. However, the average accepted optimal setting is about 110 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that the attic fan will begin to run when the temperature in the attic exceeds 110 degrees and will shut back off after the temperature dips below 110 degrees. In extremely hot climates, attic fans should be set to higher temperatures so that they don't run constantly. In colder climates, the opposite is true.

What are the Benefits of Using an Attic Fan?

Using an attic fan that is working properly and set to the right temperature offers many benefits. Air conditioning costs during the Summer months will be lowered up to 30 percent by using an attic fan and the electricity required to run an attic fan is negligible compared to the benefit. Attic fans can lower the temperature in upstairs rooms by up to 10 degrees, which is another great perk, especially for those without air conditioning. It also bears mentioning that attic fans can significantly prolong the life of roofing by lowering the heat to which a roof's shingles are exposed.
