light fixture aboove workbench

This is my third question today... is there a limit...? I would like to add an overhead light above my workbench in the cellar. I just want to use one of those simple ceramic base lights. But is there a requirement about its placement with regards to protecting it in this work area (above the bench). In other words, can the bulb hang down below the floor joists in the unfinished ceiling (this would put the light bulb at about 7 feet), or does it need a cage around it? I can't find anything about this in the code book, and our inspector in our new town is apparently really tough, so I am trying to dot all my I's and cross all my T's. Thanks for all the help. It can be mounted below the joists if you wish or you can add a cage of some other type of fixture. You could also mount a 4' fluorescent shoplight which is a little thinner than a ceramic fixture with edison bulb. You're allowed to mount it below the joists unprotected, but you're also allowed to use common sense. You can buy inexpensive cages to put around it which will save you some trouble changing bulbs every time you whack it. Personally, I'd go for the shop light, or at least multiple incandescent bulbs. A single bulb will make too many shadows. A simple $10 shop light with two 40-watt tubes will provide more light at less cost. Having said that, it's always a good idea to have at least some incandescent lighting around when using rotating tools. I don't want to de-rail the thread, but why is it good to have some incandescent light when using rotating tools? I'm starting to wire my Garage/workshop this weekend! The 60Hz flicker of a fluorescent can make some rotating tools look stationary. Ouch! Thanks - good to know. I've heard this all my life and I have NEVER experienced it. I have ONLY fluorescent lighting in my shop and I've also been in a lot of industrial shops that had all fluorescent lighting and never personally experienced it or found anyone else that had experienced the problem. Not very often, but the Strobe Light effect can have an impact on a narrow RPM range..... Likely the one tool you wouldnt expect to be running...... The flourecent tubes in my garage make my Mitre saw appear to turn in reverse...... Yes, it does happen. It's usually more of a concern in a workshop where multiple people would be working (since you'll probably hear the table saw if you're the only one in the shop). There was concern of this in a scene shop I used to work in. With a number of people working simultaneously on multiple loud tools, it was possible that someone may not realize a specific tool is running. In that case, it was the radial arm saw that occasionally looked like it was spinning slowly due to the strobe effect. Those issue is more common with magantic ballast on both flourscent and HID's but with high frequicty electronic ballast that kinda gone away that why most of the woodworking shop or other type of shop i useally end up useing the electronic ballast to slove the issue with it.
