Create A Zen Bathroom

Install natural pebble tiles to give you the feeling of being outdoors.

The word Zen represents meditation in Japanese; practicing Zen means living simply and fully in the moment or the now. Think simplicity, harmony, mindfulness and tranquility when creating your Zen bathroom. The Japanese view simplicity as highly sophisticated when applied to Zen decor, the skill of eliminating the unnecessary in order to focus on the significant. Great attention to detail also plays a major role in Zen decorating. When executed properly, Zen bathrooms are places of spiritual cleansing and refreshment, as well as retreats of calm and sensual pleasure. Craft a Zen bathroom to create your personal sanctuary.

Instructions

1. Hide items from view in your bathroom if they are not needed at the time by placing or installing a cabinet in the room. Store items such as toilet paper and toiletries in the cabinet. Keep bathroom counters clear except for necessities, such as hand soap, to ensure a clean, uncluttered look.

2. Declutter to simplify your bathroom. Collect three boxes, garbage bags, a dust rag and a felt-tip marker. Use your marker to write Throw Away, Give Away and Put Away on your boxes. Line the inside of your box labeled Throw Away with a garbage bag, then set a timer for between 10 and 60 minutes. Beginning at your bathroom entrance, work your way clockwise around the room, placing items into their appropriate boxes. Empty each box as it becomes full and place the items where they belong, such as throwing out the trash bag or sealing and putting the donation box in your car.

3. Use soft, calming colors, such as soft browns, greens and grays, on the walls and for the items in your bathroom for a relaxing, natural effect. Keep the colors monochrome, or different shades of the same color.

4. Fold towels and stack them neatly on open shelves. Open shelves offer effortless access. Fold hand and bath towels in separate stacks to give your bathroom a more orderly, clean look. Roll up hand and bath towels and place them in a wicker or bamboo basket for a spa-like look if you do not have shelves. Use quality towels made of natural resources, such as hemp, bamboo or organic cotton.

5. Tile your bathroom floor with natural pebble tiles to create an outdoor feeling of peacefulness indicative of Zen. Select tiles with a mesh backing, as they last longer. The pebble texture also prevents you from slipping while barefoot.

6. Keep your bathroom counters clear except for the most necessary items, such as hand soap. Store bathroom accessories, such as toothbrush holders, tumblers or lotion dispensers, in a cabinet away from view until needed, reducing the appearance of clutter. Also make available other items in your bathroom you and your guests would need right away, like toilet paper, towels and a wastebasket. Keep simplicity in mind when creating your Zen bathroom to ensure you use accessories sparingly.

7. Bring some nature into your bathroom, such as through a plant, an arrangement of stones or a small indoor water fountain. Alternatively, you can hang a shower curtain featuring a natural theme, such as a bamboo print.

8. Arrange votive candles or small pillar candles around your bathroom. Light these candles for a sanctuary effect as desired. Use unscented candles to prevent their scents from clashing with bath-related scents, such as bath oils.
