Replacing a thermostat not a dumb question i promise

Replacing a Thermostat (not a dumb question I promise)

Hi Everyone, I have an interesting question (and hopefully very easy). I recently purchased a condo that has a pellet stove installed. The pellet stove is a Quadra-Fire Classic Bay 1200. It is a thermostat controlled unit. The stove is in my basement and the thermostat is on the first floor. The thermostat is very cheap (it was included with the stove I believe) and about as accurate as I can set it is 'somewhere between 70 and 80'...I don't like that. So I'm going to replace it. The pellet stove manual says (word for word) 'the thermostat is a 24 volt AC thermostat. It is equipped witha an adjustable heat anticpator. Our current rating is 0.5 amps. The anticapator needs to be adjusted to the lowest setting available'...whatever that means. It a very simple 'slide bar' thermostat...2 wires only (1 red, 1 white). Anyway, I went out and bought a Honeywell RTH7400D Programmable Thermostat (package stated the thermostat 'provides electic control of 24 Vac heating and cooling systems or 750mV heating systems'. I assume this one will work (right???). I was going to replace this this morning, but when I looked through the Honeywell instructions...it basically said to hook up the new thermostat exactly like the old (match up the letters between the old and new thermostat wire connections). That's fine...sounded simple enough...except when I removed the old thermostat...there are NO letters. It just has two connectors inside that the 2 thermostat wire connect to. No letters at all. When I look at the new honeywell, I have a bunch of letters. It has 2 sets of letters one for heat pump and one for conventional (although the letters correspond to common wire connections): For heat pump: C G Y O/B RC R AUX E L * The L port here has no 'Convential' equivilant. ** The RC and R connections have a jumper installed between them For conventional (same ports, just a different lettering scheme): C G Y W RC R W2 Y2 ** The RC and R connections have a jumper installed between them. I was told to simply told by a friend to hook the white wire up to W and the red wire up to R. But that sounds too 'I don't really know, but am guessing that the letters corresponds to colors' to me...so I turn to the experts. How the heck to I hook this one up? Thanks in advance! JP Yup, it's that simple! For two wire, heat only, attach one wire to 'R' and one to 'W'. Excellent...Thanks Fixitron! In the advance set up, set it at heat only, and 3 CHP.. Thanks Jay, In the advanced setup, I set it to 'Heat Only, with no fan (conventional)'. That should work. Not sure I understand '3 CHP'... Thanks! JP 3cph would mean 3 cycles per hour. I think that is the default for fossil fuels on the thermostat anyway. Ken Gotcha...Thanks. I can't seem to find an option for that in the manual...so I may not have an option, but we'll see. Thanks for all the input folks! Once again, the DIY forums save the day! JP Originally Posted by petey305 Gotcha...Thanks. Look in your Set up Guide section of the book. I don't recall what's the set up number is. but it's there.. I put this on a few times. Hmm...still can't find anything in the manual (went page by page) specifically regarding cycles per hour. I did find something called 'Heating Cycle Rate' - Which I assume is the same thing. The options are: 5 - Gas or Oil Furnace (less than 90% efficient) 9 - Electric Furnace 3 - Gas or Oil Hot Water, Gas 90%+ High-Efficiency Furnace 1 - Gas or Oil Steam, Gas or Oil Gravity So I set this to 3...assuming it was the same. Either way, I hooked this up last night and it ran NO problem. Of course, being new to Pellet Stoves, I now know that I need to really adjust the program of this thing...but I'll do that gradually to find out what works best. Thanks all! JP You got it. Glad to hear that things worked as desired. Ken Ok. My bad! I should of say that.. I wasn't thinking of the system set up.. But yeah. You got it!
