Motorized rotating platform

Motorized Rotating Platform

Hey guys my name is oscar and I'm a research assistant for a PhD student. I've been here many times for different problems. So this is my first time actually posting one . I'm currently working on my final project and I need to build a motorized rotating platform. It's for a process called electrospinning. Anyways I have no idea start building this platform. I need the platform to be made out of metal, hopefully one that is a good conductor because I need to hook the platform up to some high voltage. Apparently the process requires me to ground the metal plate. Also I need the platform to rotate, maybe with the aid of a dc motor. I also need to be able to control the speed of the motor to a speed of 150 rpm or more. I had several ideas of do this, one of them was to drill a hole through the metal sheet and just stick it on the axle of the motor but if I do that the platform won't be stable. I currently have an industrial dc motor but I think it's too big for this process. So I would like to know what kind of motor to get and how would I be able to regulate the speed?? Also I would like to know the best possible way to mount the metal disc onto the ale of the motor. I seriously need help with this as the deadline for my project keeps approaching. Thanks How big is the platform supposed to be? Is it supposed to be the size of a Lazy Susan or the size of a stage? I guess it should be about the size of a lazy susan BALDOR Cooling Tower Direct Drive Motor and Variable Speed Drive Something like that might work. Search google images for variable speed drive motors for other ideas. Do you think this engine will work ??? That is a 240/480V AC motor. If you look at the nameplate the RPMs are too high for what you need. Varying the speed of AC motors can be very costly and should only be done using the right equipment (See FVD) DC motors on the other hand are much easier to control the speed. I am thinking you need some type of gear motor, possibly something like this. NIDEC MOTORS ACTUATORS - Geared DC Motors - Worm Gear You will definitely need some type of gear driven system like Joe mentioned. Do you have a budget or a spending limit as that will be a guiding factor too. Yh I do. It's the amount of money I have in my account Power the platform off of a used treadmill. Treadmills have speed adjustments and you should be able to find a used one cheap. Well that was helpful. Since I assume your account is limitless than I suggest buying a variable frequency controller for your motor. If your account is more modest just chuck a sanding disk holder in a drill and glue on a metal disk.
