Use An External Mic With My Pc

You can use an extermal microphone with Windows 7.

You can easily use an external microphone with Windows 7, as long as you have a microphone connection or an available USB port. This allows you to input your voice into the computer for use in recordings, voice recognition software or voice-over-ip software solutions, which essentially turns your computer into a telephone. Once physically connected, Windows 7 automatically recognizes it, but you may have to tweak some settings.

Instructions

1. Plug the microphone into your computer. The interface will likely be a 3.5 mm plug, but you may also have a small, rectangular one, which is a USB interface. Plug the former into the "mic" jack of your sound card, which will be located close to where your speakers plug into the computer. The USB can be plugged into any USB port.

2. Click the speaker icon on the Windows Taskbar, next to the system clock, which is usually located at the bottom right of your display. A pop-up will appear. Select "Recording devices."

3. Locate your microphone in the list. If you don't see it, right-click the body of the window and select "Show Disabled Devices." You should now see your microphone. If you didn't see it until you checked "Show Disabled Devices," right-click your microphone in the list and select "Enable." If there is no circled check-mark next to your microphone, right-click and select "Set as Default Device."

4. Click the microphone in the list again and click "Properties." Click the "Levels" tab. Slide the volume slider all the way to the right, if your microphone is not sensitive enough. Also make sure the speaker icon, next to the volume slider, shows sound waves emanating from it, rather than a red circle, which is muted. If you see a red circle, click the icon to un-mute it.

5. Open the program for which you would like to use the microphone. Test the microphone. In most cases, it will be fine, since you set your microphone as the default device, but sometimes there are overrides configured, so make sure the program is configured to listen to your microphone. These settings might be in a "settings," "options" or "microphone" menu option. These will be settings inherent to the program, so you will have to follow that program's instructions or help files for more specific information.
