Repair A Hi8 Videotape

Record video onto a Hi8 tape.

A Hi8 videotape is an analog video cassette used in video cameras. These tapes are about a quarter the size of a standard VHS tape, although the quality is only marginally better. To record with the tape you need it in perfect working order. If the metallic tape is crumpled, dirty or stuck inside the interior of the case, you may not be able to use the Hi8 videotape in your camera.

Instructions

1. Eject the Hi8 tape from the video camera. Press down on the small plastic release button on the top side of the case. This releases the lock holding down the plastic flap covering the tape.

2. Dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol, then rub it across the tape. This removes any dirt, fingerprints and other debris that may be preventing you from recording content onto the tape.

3. Insert a pen into the the spokes of the Hi8 tape and turn. This tightens the tape up and is useful if the tape has been pulled from the interior of the case.

4. Look on the back side of the camera (the same side as the spokes) for small plastic screws. Remove these screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Once the screws are out, pull open the Hi8 tape. Locate any knot in the tape and untie the knot, then insert the pen into the spokes and tighten the tape back up. Place the two pieces of the case together and secure the Phillips screws.
