Uses For Used Batteries

Batteries can still be salvaged even when they no longer work in personal electronics.

Batteries contain components that are corrosive and dangerous to humans as well as the environment. Yet, landfills are full of discarded batteries. Used batteries can be put to use so they do not have such a negative impact on the environment.

Street Lights

Energy Seed-powered street lights is a concept designed to use the leftover power residue in a collection of used batteries to power street lights. The concept is based on people discarding their used batteries into a drop slot in the street light lamppost. Inside, the remaining power, which is unusable in regular electronic devices, is fused together to power the street light.

Renewable Energy Power Storage

General Motors has planned to create options for the used batteries on electric cars once the battery starts to lose its charge. One option is to sell used batteries to people who use solar energy or wind energy. A battery, at the end of its car life, can still have 50 percent to 70 percent of its useful life left and can store renewable energy for use during off-peak hours.

Considerations

Batteries can also be recharged and reused for their original intended purpose. However, never use rechargeable batteries in safety equipment, such as smoke alarms. Their power runs out so fast that they don't even operate the smoke alarm enough to let you know the power has run out. Do not open used batteries; the components inside are toxic for touching and breathing.
