Move To Hawaii And Take A Car

Moving your car to Hawaii takes a little planning.

Who wouldn't want to move to Hawaii? The beautiful mountains, dramatic cliffscapes, volcanoes, surf and sun are all world-renowned. When you get to Hawaii you will need to get around. You have already spent money on your vehicle, and would like to take it to Hawaii. This can be accomplished fairly easily using one of the shipping companies available. First you must consider that it costs around $1,000 dollars to ship a car to Hawaii, so if your car only has a few years left on it, you may want to buy a car when you get there.

Instructions

Move to Hawaii and Take a Car

1. Arrange for shipping your car. Among the companies that offer personal automobile shipping are Matson and Pasha. Contact one of these agencies and arrange to ship your car. They will give you a date to deliver your car to the docks. Make sure you keep your car registration from the state you're leaving. You will need this when you register the car in Hawaii.

2. Drive to California. All the shipping companies that offer shipping of personal vehicles to Hawaii depart from California, largely from Los Angeles. Drive to the location of the shipping company and have the company load your vehicle onto the ship. When you arrive, you will get a Bill of Lading and a shipping receipt. These are legal documents that you will need to register your car in Hawaii.

3. Travel to Hawaii yourself. At the airport, you can take public transportation or rent a car to get around while you car is traveling overseas. It may take six or seven days for your car to arrive.

4. Pick up your vehicle. Most shipping companies own a vehicle retrieval point where you can retrieve your car.

5. Have your vehicle inspected at a service station to acquire a Hawaii Inspection Certificate. This is needed to register your vehicle.

6. Go to your satellite city hall and fill out the forms to register your vehicle in Hawaii. You will need the Bill of Lading, shipping receipt, and your out-of-state car registration. Hawaii will honor your out-of-state registration, and you will not have to re-register until the original expiration date. This costs around $15.
