Types of Film
When film is brought to a processing lab, there is a multi-step process that must be completed before actual pictures are retrieved. This process requires expensive equipment and multiple steps that a trained associate must learn before he develops photos. The start of the developing depends on the film provided. A one-time use camera must be taken apart with a screwdriver to get the film roll out. There is usually a tab that can be flipped open so the film slides out. Waterproof cameras need extra work to remove the bound plastic case.
Preparing
Once the photo operator has film rolls, he must be prepared for the film processing machine. The roll is wound clockwise to loosen the film, and a special black film tape is stuck inside of the canister. When the tape is pulled out, it brings the front tab of the film roll with it. The tab is taped to a plastic carrier that leads the film through the processing machine.
Chemical Developing
The film is loaded into the chemical processing machine. The cover of the machine must be closed so no light is exposed into the machine. Sensors on the machine will automatically indicate that film is being processed. The film goes through chemicals in the machine to develop the photos. This process takes five to seven minutes to complete. When the film is complete, it hangs off the end of the machine until the photo associate hangs it up.
Scanning
The film is now ready to be scanned. Until it scans, it hangs on a metal film carrier to prevent dust and dirt collecting on the negatives. A gloved operator grabs the roll of film, reads the order and makes the settings in the scanner's computer. For example, a photo order may want doubles, larger prints or a photo CD. The scanner feeds all of the film in, makes an initial scan and then goes back out as the operator looks at each photo.
Correction
When the operator looks at each photo, he makes adjustments as needed. Reds, yellows or blues may be added to a photo to enhance the color, the photo's contrast may change or the operator can even adjust the photos to true black and white. Once the roll is complete, the order is sent to the printer. The operator takes note of how many prints are being processed and prices the order.
Printing
The photos are sent to the printer. This process takes around 10 minutes and depends on how many pictures there are. Pictures automatically drop into a photo queue at the end of the printer. The operator picks the photos up, packages them and cuts the negatives to complete the photo project.
