Choose The Right Speaker Wire

Just bought a great new sound system, but don't know which wires you need to produce optimal sound? Here are a few quick and easy things to look for to help you choose the right speaker wire to turn a party into a violation of local noise ordinances.

Instructions

1. Think about the quality of your system. If you have an expensive system, buying a thicker gauge wire will allow it to really shine but a thicker, more expensive wire like a Monster Cable would be wasted on a moderately priced system.

2. Determine how much distance the wire must travel. If you are trying to connect multiple rooms and need hundreds of feet of wire length, buying a thicker wire will improve sound quality. For small rooms, thinner wire will work just fine.

3. Determine if you need to run your cable through a wall. If so, purchase a wire that is UL rated and marked CL2 or CL3. Talk to the staff at your local electronics store, like Circuit City, to make sure your get what you need.

4. Know your jargon. The thicker the wire, the lower the gauge (for example, 12 gauge is thicker than 16 gauge). Use the recommended speaker wire for your system.

5. Measure exactly how long the wire will travel. Use a measuring tape and record the exact length, then add 15% to make sure you have enough length. For example, if you need to run a wire 20 feet, you should make sure your wire is at least 23 feet long.
