My Sprint Nextel Cell Voicemail Doesn'T Work; It Just Rings

When someone calls your Sprint Nextel phone number and you aren't available to answer, your outgoing voicemail message should play, inviting the caller to leave a message you can retrieve at a later date. If the outgoing message doesn't play when when someone calls, or the phone just rings without picking up, take steps to re-activate the outgoing voicemail message.








Voicemail Box Not Set Up


One reason for continuous ringing when you or someone else calls your Sprint Nextel cellphone is that you haven't set up your voicemail box and outgoing message yet. The outgoing message isn't set up automatically, although a placeholder message that includes your 10-digit phone number often exists before you set up your own personal outgoing message.


Set Up Voice Mail


To set up your voicemail box and outgoing message, dial the "voicemail" shortcut key from your handset or call your own phone number. Wait for the automated message to begin playing and select option "3" to record your own personalized greeting. After you have recorded your outgoing message, press "1" to listen to it, "1" again to set it as your greeting and "2" to erase and re-record the greeting.








Temporary Network Error


If the phone rings continuously, even after you have correctly set up an outgoing message and your voicemail box, the error may be related to the Sprint network and not to your phone at all. To see whether this is the case, dial *611 from your handset and press "0" after the automated message begins to speak to a representative and ask her if other customers have reported the same problem.


Wrong Number


Alternatively, you or the person calling you may simply have dialed the wrong number, something that's difficult to ascertain immediately if the phone rings continuously -- a message never plays telling you which number you've called. If a friend reports this problem to you, and you're sure you've set up your voicemail box correctly, instruct him to end the call and look at his handset screen to confirm he's entered the correct number. If not, he should re-dial and try the call again.
