Find Out If A Television Is Digital

Analog Television

With the digital transition of television broadcasting you need a digital tuner in your television to be able to watch over-the-air broadcasts. While some televisions will state on the cabinet that it is a digital television, most will not. All instruction manuals will state if a television is digital by listing the ATSC/NTSC or QAM tuner in the book, but what if you don't have the instruction manual? Use this "how-to" article as a guide to help you determine if a television is digital.

Instructions

Find Out if a Television is Digital

1. Locate coaxial cable input on television. This may also be called UHF/VHF Input. If there is not a label near any of the inputs, the coaxial cable input will be a silver terminal with a small thread surrounding it.

2. Screw in the antenna into the coaxial cable input. Do not over-tighten the antenna, slightly less than finger tight will suffice.

3. Position the antenna so that the aerials or rabbit ears are fully extended. The proper angle of the aerials will depend on what signals are available in the area but as a starting point, extend the aerials straight up (90 degrees) and reduce the angle halfway to 45 degrees on each side.

4. Turn the television on and bring up the main menu. You will need to perform a channel scan or auto scan on your television. This will be under columns usually entitled "Channel" or "Setup." This can take up to one hour on some television sets.

5. After the channel scan has completed, change the channel with the channel up button on the television. If you notice that there is another version of a channel on your television, such as 3.1 in addition to 3, then you have a digital television. If you do not notice any ".1" channels, you do not have a digital television and must purchase either a new digital television or a digital conversion box to continue watching television.
