How Do Windowless Air Conditioners Work

In places where landlords do not allow window mounted air conditioners, windowless models are growing in popularity.

A windowless or portable air conditioner is a possible solution to cool a room or small apartment when there is no window or window air conditioners are not allowed. Some computer professionals use windowless air conditioners to keep server rooms cooler than central air conditioning keeps them.

Exhaust

Windowless air conditioners are placed on the floor of the room you are trying to cool, rather than in a window. A windowless unit brings the warm air in from the room, dehumidifies the air, then blows cool air back into the room. Ideally, the warm air is then exhausted out through a hose that goes out a window. It may exhaust into a lowered ceiling or another room if there is no window.

Water

The dehumidifying process does create water, and the water does need to go somewhere. Some models empty into a collection pan or bucket, which may need to be emptied between every eight hours to once a day. Other models send the water outside through an exhaust hose, while the third type evaporates the condensed water, so there is no need to dispose of it.

Ineffeciency

Windowless air conditioners are not energy-efficient machines because of the inefficient exhaust system. Since there is sometimes nowhere to vent the exhaust, they are often inefficient at cooling. They are high energy consumers as well.
